When knee and shoulder problems require surgery, most of these can be treated arthroscopically. The benefit of arthroscopic treatment is that it is truly minimally invasive. This means that the approach to surgery is through tiny punctures that allow the use of thin, small instruments for working inside the joints. Because of this minimally invasive approach, pain and other problems as a result of surgery are less than with open procedures.
